  • Elderly sit to stand

I'm looking for exercise suggestions for a 95 year old woman who uses a walker and doesn't have any equipment. She has a home aide who can supervise her. No real health issues other than frailty.

Austin had previously recommended sit-to-stand for another elderly person. She can do that, but only using her hands. Do you have any recommendations for building up to standing without hands?

She also walks and does a few very basic moves (e.g., sit on chair and extend legs). Are there other exercises you'd recommend? Are there any sites or resources? Any worthwhile easy to obtain equipment?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum.

This is a good place to start. Do more reps with hands, and over time she will eventually be able to start doing some reps without them. Another option is to start by laying something down (e.g., stacked books) so she can sit and stand to a higher "depth" without hands, and work that depth down over time. For someone in this situation, almost all of my focus is going to be on strengthening the hip/quad musculature in order to restore independence before I spend much worrying about upper body movements.
