  • Body Weight/Fat Goals

    Hi Jordan,

I am 5ft 10in and have been losing weight for the last 4 months. Started at 208lbs/33%bf at the start of December 2020 and I am currently 184lbs/23%bf - losing 1lb per week (started at 1.5lbs per week for the first few weeks). My long term goal is to be as big as I can be while having visible abs. In numbers, I would like to be 175lbs with a sub 15% body fat. If I lose 10 more pounds I will probably be 175lbs/20%bf. Would you recommend staying at 175/20 and try to "recomp" to 175/15 or should I get down to 160/15 and slowly get back to 175/15?

    Thanks.

I don't think there is going to be any long-term difference in where you end up if you stay at 175/20 or get down to 160/15. Rather, I think you should let your body fat preferences and dietary adherence levels dictate how you manage your energy balance

So are you saying that "bulking" and "cutting" phases are not recommended? Is it better to stay at a constant weight to build muscle and lose fat?

No, that's not what you asked or what I said.

You asked about what the difference would be between staying at 175/20% or getting to 160/15% in order to attain 175/15%.

I don't think there's likely to be a big difference that I can predict from here. While I think it's unlikely that there's a 15lb difference for 5% BF, I don't think one strategy is clearly heads and shoulders better than the other.

Ah sorry got my numbers mixed up converting kg to lbs. I meant, once I reach 75KG*/15%bf, should I stay at 75kg and try to lower my body fat? Or is it better to lower my body fat first to 12% (which will require me getting down to a skinny 68-70kg) then slowly get back to 75kg while maintaining 12% bf?

If there's not much difference between the two approaches I would prefer staying at 75kg and lowering my body fat. Most articles I read about bulking and cutting say that you should first cut down to 10-12% body fat then bulk. But, a. getting to 10-12% body fat would mean I will have to become skinny, b it might not be necessary as I can stay at a higher weight and "recomp"?

If you want to be at a lower body fat than 15%, I don't see a good reason to stop at 15%.
