  • Waist Circumference or BF%: Which to Use When Deciding to Stop a Bulking Phase?

    Hello Dr. Feigenbaum,

I was curious as to whether you think a change in waist circumference or a change in Total BF% via DEXA is more reliable/useful for deciding when to end a bulking phase and enter a maintenance phase.

For example, if I have a 30" waist at the beginning of the bulk and do not desire to gain more than three inches on my waist (i.e. stop at 33'), would this be less or more ideal than going off of a 2-2.5% change in BF% on a DEXA (e.g. stopping at 7.5-8% BF if beginning at 5.5%)?

    Thanks!

I don't know that either is better in this specific context, e.g. where you're well clear of a waist circumference or body fat that increases risk of health problems.

I'd probably use waist circumference and body weight to guide management here. I wouldn't pay for a dexa scan for body fat assessment.
