Is a post workout meal essential for "gains"?

    Is a post workout meal essential for "gains"?

    If one usually trains late at night, and meets their required caloric/macro needs during the day, would you still recommend a simple shake etc. as a post workout meal or is it unnecessary for adequate recovery/building muscle/getting stronger?
