  • Should I leave the assistants exercises in the past?

I used to train a lot in my teens, twenties and early thirties but stopped for about 10 years for a number of reasons. I would definitely class what I did in the exercise camp, not training.

My kids started judo a couple of years ago and this year I joined them on the mat after a 25 year break so getting strong again is important to me, but I also want to look better than I do too. This time round but on the Mat and in the Gym I now want to train effectively with the biggest RIO for the time I put in.

I have recently started again using the SS novice LP model and things are going ok but I’m concerned at the lack of the assistance exercises I used to do. In the past I used to do a weekly cycle like a chest and triceps day, back and biceps day, legs day and shoulders day. Stuff like that.

I do gym work on three days and one evening on the mat at Judo.

In the Gym, do I just need to get over the lack of curls, raises, rows etc, or is it ok with programming an exercise or two on top of the normal novice SS LP exercises?

What is your height and weight?

What has been the trend of your current numbers in the gym on the main lifts?

What are the actual goals that you want to accomplish?

Height 6ft, weight 196lb. About 20% body fat.

I’ve been adding 2.5kg to each time to squat, bench, press and 5kg to deadlift.

I would like to build my strength as high as I can, put on muscle with shape/proportions with a better body fat percentage. I don’t plan on doing competitive judo again, but I want to stay in contention with lad much younger than I am. I would love to be lifting the sort of weights I used to 15-20 years ago. My personal best on the deadlift was 220kg but I’m sure it would have been higher if I had a focused plan 20 years ago.

This is pretty much everyone's goal. This is also a long term process. The novice program you're doing is a more focused, short-term program. It won't make or break you during the few months you'll be doing it, compared to your overall training career. I'd keep going as is for now, and we (and many others) have plenty of post-novice programming options that will fit the bill for you.
