  • Sumo or conventional deadlift?

    Hey BBM team,

Curious how you personally would decide to either do conventional or sumo and why you decided to pull conventional?

the reason I ask this question is that my squat seems to be rocketing up in strength and deadlift is really stagnant

there is only 20kg between my deadlift and squat maxes
squat is 200kg and deadlift is a mere 220kg.

i deadlift conventional which is the way I would prefer to deadlift but I feel I’m maybe stronger more competitive when competing pulling sumo.

And I also seem to set up and feel more comfortable pulling convention at a 2” deficit I’m really going wrong somewhere.

    I have sent a video of me deadlift 175kg for 6 @8

hope you can help thank you

    Hey Cole,

I don't think it matters outside of personal preference what variation you choose unless you're competing at a high level.

If I had a gun to my head and someone made me pick a way to figure this out, I'd probably recommend training both at the same time (e.g. 2 different days per week) for a training cycle or two and picking whichever you feel more comfortable with. You can always come back to it in the future, of course.

A 20kg spread between squat and DL maxes is not unusual either.
