  • The Nuances (zing) of Where to Start

    Gents -

I'm going to be careful here and not ask the oft-repeated question of 'am I an intermediate?'

Preamble: 34 years old (next week, anyway), male, 143lbs. I have been lifting weights for a long time (apparently not well or with an appropriate diet, one might surmise).
    Lifetime maxes:
    - Squat: 275
    - Deadlift: 330
    - Bench: 250
    - Press: 110

My training time slot is during my workday, on my lunch break. So, on the outside I have about 75 minutes of training time, soup to nuts. Add in transit and changing clothes and I'm at about 60 mins. During any given set of exercises I typically rest in the neighborhood of 60 seconds. I exercise (I don't use the word 'train' because I'm not on a dedicated program at the present. I have run the SSLP before, twice, for approx 3-4 months) at least 4x/week between Monday through Friday and don't have a recovery problem (most of the time).

Ok, I say all that to say this; I want to re-start and dedicate myself to the SS Method until I can get my weight under control (that is, until it goes up substantially). I think the basic ABA plan is a good starting point and I hope/plan on progressing to the Bridge (thanks for making that free, by the way). My concern is that I'm one of those people who, because of previous experience/exposure, will hit a 'plateau' in my early stages of the LP. I watched the BBM video entitled 'Starting Strength Novice Linear Progression, Tips and Tricks' and got some quality information.

I'm wondering, instead of finding myself to be an artificial intermediate or just flat doing something wrong, is there a truncated time frame that's appropriate for some people, or should I give the restarted LP a fixed amount of time and make other adjustments (e.g. - increased caloric intake)?

    Much obliged,
    Hoop

The only way to find out is to give the LP a shot, gain weight as you go, and see where you end up. Once it ends, move on. No need to agonize over the "optimal" length.
