I am 73. Convalescence after two (2) major episodes of foot surgery restricted my activity level for nearly three (3) years. This resulted in loss of muscle strength in my lower body as well as my upper body. I have begun a regimen of weight-training to try to regain some lost muscle strength. I have encountered many different (and conflicting) approaches as to how to proceed.
A trainer at my gym recommends 20 reps, 4 sets, rapid-action-lifting, per muscle group. I have also read recommendations of 8-12 reps, 3 sets, slow-action-lifting-to-muscle-failure, for each muscle group.
Is there any single best way to approach this? How should I proceed?
