Bone mineral density

Hi everyone,

not sure if this is the right place to post. It’s medical but not a question, rather a testimonial, I just need to share

I (f, 48) need to get my BMD checked every couple of years due to a chronic condition (mild in my case) that (on paper) predisposes me to osteoporosis.

The first check was 2014, when I was in my mid thirties. I was at the border to osteopenic and way below my age cohort at the lumbar spine, femur looked better.

2018, another BMD measurement, similar results. My vit D was checked for the first time, I think they just included the screening in their standard protocol for that condition. I had severe deficiency and was put on vit D and stayed on it ever since (20k per week with yearly checks).

In 2023 BMD results looked pretty similar in terms of absolute score (T -1.07). But as I had aged meanwhile, it was ok for the age cohort and passed as totally fine.

No medical staff ever told me to do resistance training. Never ever. I did some at some point, but not consistently over a longer period. And it was machine based, not barbell.

Now fast forward, I started strength training consistently 4x per week in September 2024. I lost around 30 kg over the last 3 years or so. Still need to lose 10-15 more. Since end of last year I follow a barbell focused training plan. My numbers are still modest, my current deadlift PB is 105 kg.

I went to get my BMD checked today. My T score improved to almost 0, meaning I got bones like a young chick, way ahead of my age cohort. Doc was quite surprised when I showed him my old scores.

Cannot tell you how great this feels! All my health markers have improved substantially over the last couple of years. I had hoped for an improvement of BMD for sure, but this by far exceeds my expectations!
