Can you really change your bodyfat set point?

Lyle McDonald says that there’s no evidence that we can really change our bodyfat setpoint in this interview (0:11-7:12) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqw-RJzrOjI&t=758s

Assuming optimal hormonal milieu, training, nutrition, sleep and all other lifestyle factors can you permanently lower your bodyfat setpoint according to your coaching experience and what the literature says? If not, what exactly is the point of cutting if your body is just going to want to put the fat back on? I’d like to think that it is changeable but takes several years.

I think that is a tongue in cheek statement, as there’s not an absence of data showing successful dieters don’t change their BF set point either so…

If you can maintain the changes needed to change BF and sustain it, you will change the set point.

How long would one have to maintain a new BF% for the body to change its set point? I’m sure it depends on the person, but would you say 3-6 months or more like a year?
