For my introduction to exercise science class, we were assigned to “write a workout” for our assigned partner based on their 3 minute step test results and then do a presentation on it. He wondered why everyone was freaking out when he had not explained the limits and specifics of this assignment and had not taught us anything about resistance training, energy systems, or exercise prescription yet. My assignmed partner is a basketball player, and so without knowing the limits of the assignment, I went ahead and developed a week of programming for my partner based on his sport and his off-season goals. Our professor wanted us to be able to explain why we programmed the way we did, and that’s how I arrived at the extra two pages of information. The part about the 3 minute step test mostly got lost in the wake, but I tried to make it relevant in the conditioning section. This word document is basically extracted from my powerpoint presentation. If you can’t tell, the program is HEAVILY inspired by what I’ve learned from you guys through all of your content and from the programming lecture at the seminar. I’m just not totally sure if I have applied or explained everything correctly. I have already given the presentation, and I was given an automatic 100% from my professor, but I would way more appreciate any thoughts from you guys on what I did right if anything and what should have been done differently.
Thanks!
Pretty good job, Perry. I like how you explained your choices in the document.
Some things to consider:
- What way(s) could you make the conditioning more specific to the sport? What sort of progression would you/could you use here?
- Given the basketball is a high velocity sport, what sort of considerations might this generate for intensity and movement selection?
- What sort of movement substitutions would you allow for this individual?
Hopefully everyone doesn’t start posting their homework here…but this was pretty good!!
