I was wondering with my new addition of jogging/running. What is your take on jogging/running outdoors during a heat advisory. Chicago area is currently in the high 90’s feeling like 105.
Typically today I would be doing 35 minutes total. I jog for 3min walk for 2 for 7 rounds.
I would generally not recommend that unless prepping for an event/task in the same conditions. Of course, some people will tolerate it fine and many could adapt to the demands, but I think other options are likely to be more productive with less risk/fatigue if available.
I heard it was hot up there! It was over 100 once when I lived there back in 2012. I’m down in Florida now, so I just have to deal with the 100+ HI, which is most of the time when I run in the summer. My run today was 103 HI for 30 minutes. It’s manageable, but be sure to hydrate well before, during (if possible), and after. If you’re not acclimated to it, I wouldn’t advise it though.
As a Brit who moved to the US to play soccer, dealing with the heat and humidity of the midwest in the early season, and especially the preseason, was one of the biggest challenges (Missouri has the worst of the weather in every season). What I would say, from experience, is if you decide to challenge the elements at least adjust your route to do multiple smaller laps of a route rather than one long out and back route. That will make it far easier to deal with the conditions starting to get the better of you. e.g. for 4 miles do 8 x 1/2 mile routes rather than 2 miles out and 2 miles back.
