Should there be a significant difference in the resistance training protocol for individuals with cerebral palsy? In terms of exercise selection, intensity, frequency, volume, etc? Are there any resources to utilize that have a better grasp on training recommendations for this population?
There is enormous heterogeneity across this population, so we would say the training should be tailored to the specific abilities, limitations, and goals of the individual (so … just like anybody else).
In other words, there are no specific exercises that should be included or avoided based on having CP. There is no intensity that should be used or avoided based on having CP. There are no specific volumes or frequencies that should be used based on having CP. Rather, these should be based purely on the individual.
This is the same argument we make with respect to training women, older individuals, or most other supposed “special populations”.
