Brian’s Training Log

… and some days you do (might?)

comp DL 45x5, 135x5, 225x3, 275x2, 315x1, 335x1@6, 355x1@7, 365x1@8, 315x5x2 sets @8, try sumo for shits and giggles 315x1.
comp BP 45x5, 95x5, 135x3, 185x2 (whoops, thought I was going to 155), 205x1@7, 215x1@8, 185x5x3 @8
Rows - myo reps (12,4,4,4,4,4,3)
Dips (you-go-I-go 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2)

Notes:
Met up with my buddy Joe to train today. I coach him a little bit and we didn’t have to rush today so took sweet time (around 100 minutes total). the DL was on a texas DL bar, with bumper plates, so fast, whippy, and heavier than it would have been other wise. Tried sumo for a rep after the work sets and all I can really say is I have even less idea if it’s something I should try again.
Joe got 410x1 @8, a PR

BP we spent a lot of time getting Joe’s technique better. It’s difficult given the available bench, but he did a good job and got another PR - 215x1@8.5
Joe had never done myo reps and was confused by my description, so we did that here. Dips I haven’t done in a long time (like, 30 pounds ago), and joe had never really done them, so it worked out fine that we didn’t finish a third ladder.

GPP: 25 minutes on ergometer, 5300m 22spm average.

This was good!

I hate my gym.

Went this evening because the wife and wife and child return tomorrow and I thought it would be nice to not have to rush. Only to get to the gym at peak traffic and stupidity.

Ended up frustrated and hurrying to GTFO of there.

Squat 315x1@8, 255x5@8x 2 sets
press 150x1@8, 130x5@8 x 2 sets
in about half an hour. I was too upset at every one around me, so while the weight on each set was not prohibitive, my technical issues all came out; balance in squat, bar path and breathing during the Press.

Missed opportunity at a a really good session

DL 45x5, 135x5, 225x3, 315x1, 340x1@8, 315x4@8x 3 sets.

Weird but good session.

squat 45x4x2, 135x4, 225x4, 245x1, 265x1, 285x1@6, 305x1@7, 320x1@9 - I hit the rack walking out and walking in. 275x4@8 x3 sets - first set was fine, but balance was too far back; second set I almost lost my third rep on my toes, but the third set was just right.

Press 45x5, 95x5, 115x3, 135x2, 145x1@7, 155x1@8, 135x4@8,8,9. Second set I let get out in front, third set I was just tired.

chins 6 mins 24 reps.

Very tired but good overall session, even if I had to cut it short for time.

lat pulldown 60 reps in 6 minutes

in absolute terms: garbage. In light of forgetting headphones and coffee, and my son waking us up at 430; ok, I can see how this wasn’t that bad.

Anyway. Next week is last week of this template. And my right elbow is developing a little pain.

Last week of GPP endurance template
squat w/belt: 45x4x3, 135x4, 225x4, 285x1@ez, 305x1@joke, 325x1@8 - ties gym PR, at easier rpe, but in reviewing the video the depth was borderline at best :frowning:

press w belt 45x4, 75x4, 105x4, 135x1@ez, 150x1@7, 160x1@8 - PR, but would be red lighted for knee kick :frowning:
135x4@7.5,8

Comp DL 45x4x2, 135x4, 225x4, 315x1, 365x1@8, 315x4@8, 315x4@8 - not my best DLs

im playing flag football this fall and want to make sure I don’t do something stupid and get injured because I wasn’t prepared.

Since its a recreational league, I’m not too concerned with the top end, just about getting acclimated to running again.

Lifting wise this month and August will be like the GPP hypertrophy template.

This was tough! All sets on the three minutes or faster ( I.e. warm ups)

Comp Squat 45x6x2, 135x6, 185x6, 225x6@6, 235x6@7, 245x6@8 x2 sets

pendlay rows myo reps 135x12+4+3 - whew that was bad
db curls 20s x8x3 sets

all in 46 minutes. All over the place, form wise. Very tired.

Challenging but very good:
press with belt, strict from dead stop - 45x6x2, 75x6, 95x6@6, 105x6@7, 115x6@7.5, 120x6@8

RDL 45x8, 135x8, 185x8@6, 205x8@7, 225x8@8 x2 sets - woof, tough

DB row 50x10,10,10,8,8,8 each side in 8 minutes
triceps pressdpwn 12x3

tempo runs 50m x4x2 sets 80mx2

all li in one hour.

Nice going Brian. I am right there with you being tired with kiddo walking up at all hours. Tired is par for the course. This morning he didn’t wake up as usual and we had to prod him… You start to wonder why they aren’t waking up multiple times a night.

I have also put a 3 minute limit to rest between sets, including having set up the phone to video and get belt/wraps/straps on. Weights are falling off a bit to ensure RPEs stay roughly on target.

Are you re-doing the GGP Endurance template?

Thanks!
Nope, Teddy, It’s actually the GPP Hypertrophy template, basically.

I am playing a field sport again this fall (recreationally, mind you) but I haven’t run at all in over a year, so I want to make sure that I don’t do something preventable and stupid like a hamstring pull. And of course if you’re going to run then the only real prep is to do some running.

I pole vaulted in high school, so I got in to Charlie Francis’ training methodologies in a big way back then. If you go and look at what they did w/r/t to conditioning, i.e. Tempo Runs, that’s the basic idea I’m going after, essentially low intensity interval training, low intensity relative to a competition sprint. The basic volume prescription is 1000m tempo/ session x 3 sessions/week for a 60m sprinter, which is basically what a field sport athlete is. I’m starting at 600m a session or so, gradually adding volume to around 1000m a session.

Additionally, if you go and download the GPP essentials over there, you’ll see the lifting recommendation is essentially a poorly thought out hypertrophy phase (6-10 reps x 3 sets x 4-6 exercises/session). Tempo and Hypertrophy compliment each other because neither tempo running nor hypertrophy focused lifting has that great of a systemic demand.

The multi-jumps are an idea from Boo Schexnayder and Dan Pfaff; these are low intensity jumps standing in one place or over a short area. They help to condition the body to produce and absorb force without beating you up too badly. The last time I did more intensive jumping or sprinting I was somewhere around 30-45 pounds lighter (15-20kg), so there’s too mush risk diving right into things like: Accels/Max Velocity sprints/Jumps over flat land or Depth Jumps. If I were already jacked AF and acclimated to running and jumping, then the means I’d use would be those more intensive ones. If I am progressing well, I may work in things like hill sprints and jumps up a small hill to begin to get that more intensive work. Explosive Medicine ball throws and short starts from weird positions (like push-up position start, kneeling starts, or rollover starts) are also good GPP into more specific sprinting work. If I don’t get to these, I’m not going to worry because it’s recreation after all.

So to put it all together: July and August (as much as I can, given the cross country move we’re going through) is a block where the training goal is to acclimate myself to running distances between 5-80m with intermittent rest, because I will be playing a field sport in September and October. The complimentary goal is to lose a few pounds and build some additional muscle. Last, If I get a chance to re-introduce the low end of the high intensity work, great. In one sense I want to cram as much training into the available time too, because the improvement in work capacity will facilitate better play (and because it will set up a better return to powerlifting after that season ends).

During the season I’ll run the bridge 1.0.

After the season ends (end of october), I’ll sign up for a meet this winter, do general training until I’m 12 weeks out, and then run the 12 week strength program (3 day).
