Amtriptyline & Sertraline

Hi,

I’ve been taking 50mg Amitriptyline before bed for the past 2 years to treat my IBS symptoms. Since having a major depressive episode I’ve also been taking 100mg of Sertraline since end of April this year. I’ve been told by 2 different doctors that both are fine to take at the same time. However, when discussing my medication today, a different doctor has told me I should immediately start reducing my Amitriptyline as the 2 medications together can lead to some serious health problems, at least at the dose I’m currently taking.

I’m going to be following his advice but I’m wondering if this is just a precautionary action or should I be a bit more concerned? If you guys happen to know of any problems when taking both of these medications.

Thanks very much for your help,

James

They may be concerned about the risk of serotonin syndrome. Unfortunately I can’t make specific recommendations on what you “should” do with your medicines via the forum here, but I would say that that risk is very low with this combination at those dosages.
