Basedow's Disease

Hi BBM Team,

since my wife (36) recently had the diagnoses of Basedow’s Disease I was wondering if you happen to have any insight to that disease.
The disease isn’t life threatening I know, but my wife is quite down because of it since she was always very healthy (but had a very bad upbringing and a Job in healthcare of the eldery for 20 years which she hated since the situation in germany is very dire in that field)

But her endocrinologist told her that she can do nothing diet-wise exept for avoiding iodine which is hard to believe and if you read in the internet there is a plentora of things you can do but then again… its the internet and that is full of bs.

long talk … is there anything you could provide?

Hi,

This condition is much more commonly known as Graves’ disease. It is an autoimmune condition that leads to an over-activation of the thyroid gland, leading to excess thyroid hormone. It is typically treated with anti-thyroid drugs like methimazole in order to achieve remission, but in some severe cases may require other more aggressive medical or surgical treatments.

With that said, can you clarify what your question is here?

The Question would be if you happen to know if there are in fact things she could do to kind of “fight” the Disease apart from just taking the medication (on which she is) diet wise because he told her that there is nothing she could and thats a little bit frustrating.

The Doctor already told her that the last step would be to remove her thyroid gland which she is hesitant to do and luckily her Doctor too.

It would be great if there were dietary changes that could reliably treat or put all medical conditions into remission. Unfortunately this isn’t the case; we don’t have evidence of a particular diet that has reliable benefits for Graves’ disease. This condition can sometimes overlap with other autoimmune conditions like Celiac disease, for example, for which there are specific diets that would be recommended; but in the absence of such a situation, most claims about diet & Graves’ disease remain anecdotal/speculative at present.
