Any negative health consequences for using Benadryl regularly to fall asleep?
Yes, its anticholinergic activity can increase the risk of cognitive issues (e.g., dementia) long-term.
Speaking of sleep aids, do you have a recommendation for occasional use, specifically for falling asleep on long-haul airplane trips?
There really aren’t sleep aids that are well-suited for this. When changing time zones however, low-dose melatonin 30-minutes prior to bed can help reset circadian rhythm timing a bit.
FWIW, I’ve been taking generic ambien, but I seem to need a much larger dose than the usual prescription, which make me worry, and even then I’m also not sure if it’s actually have an effect or it’s mainly acting as a placebo. At least I don’t seem to get any side effects.
I’ll try low-dose melatonin for circadian rhythm. Is 1mg a suitable amount?
0.5- 1mg would be reasonable to start.
