Coffee

Greetings Docs! I have a question in regards to coffee,

Ive recently discovered that after years of thinking I hate it, I actually enjoy it. With the colder weather coming in I think I’d like to start having some warm coffees sometimes . However I remember reading before about how it could negatively impact cholesterol levels. I’m wondering what are the best ways to consume it if I’m someone who keeps an eye on my lipids. I’m thinking about just getting a regular old coffee pot and making it with filters , is this ok? I’ve seen bamboo filters are they better than paper? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I would also be drinking strictly decaf as I tend to get bad anxiety with any caffeine, not sure if this impacts your answer or not.

While paper-filtered coffee does remove certain compounds that can impact blood lipid levels, I wouldn’t really worry about this unless you have a demonstrated lipid issue and consumed a lot of unfiltered coffee.

Do you mean that they remove compounds in a positive way ?

Yes, they filter out the compounds that otherwise have a tendency to increase LDL-c levels.

Again, this is not of primary concern for most people at most habitual levels of intake, but if someone had 1) difficult to control blood lipids/high CV risk, 2) already had their diet in order, and 3) was consuming a lot of unfiltered coffee, I’d consider trying filtered to see whether it made any notable impact. An uncommon situation, for sure.
