Current opioid epidemic

Hello Jordan and Austin, I have a question about how to deal with misinformation surrounding the use of substances and what they can do for physical/emotional pain and if there is anything I can do to help my family and community. I’ll describe the problem I’m having a bit more in detail: my younger brother has been abusing substances right now to deal with his depression and anxiety, his health and lifestyle are very poor as well. He smokes regularly, eats processed foods, never seems to sleep well and will sometimes sleep until 3 PM. He has also abused opiates and recently overdosed and attempted suicide for the second time in the past ten months.

I feel a bit helpless and as if there is nothing I can do because he seems to be closed off to learning new information and ways of dealing with his problems. I don’t know if he even wants to exercise or do anything to improve his health, I’m not sure if he would enjoy anything related to weight training either. Is there some kind of resource I can direct or influence him towards? Because it seems he just keeps going in and out of treatment centers and sober living homes without much success. Do you know if there are any kind of listening or communication skills for dealing with people with addictions? Thanks again.

Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear about this situation. It is extremely challenging to work with those who are closed off in this way. Here are some places where you may start to find some helpful information for yourself, and potentially for him.
