Depression and Antidepressants

What are the long-term effects of depression? Can antidepressants have long-term side effects?

Hey Clint,

These are both very broad questions that are admittedly outside of the scope of a forum reply. Yes, there are wide-ranging risks to untreated or poorly managed depression. Similarly, all medications have the potential of side effects with use, which have to be weighed against the potential benefit. If you have a specific question regarding depression’s influence on a specific outcome, we may be able to provide some insight, but this is a bit too broad for a forum reply.

Is there any evidence that anti-depression meds significantly alter someone’s risk tolerance? Ie, they make someone who may be risk adverse into a risk taker or vice versa?

Depression itself is a risk factor for this type of behavior, but generally speaking, most SSRI’s and atypical agents like bupropion do not do this. We should also be clear that “any evidence” is not sufficient for getting a sense of what is probable.
