Follow Up to HDL / Triglycerides Questions...

Dr. Baraki,

Thanks again for the insight concerning my most recent lipid profile. Since our last discussion, I have reduced my body weight to 188, waist size to 36.5, and increased daily fiber. I am not scheduled for more blood work until later this year, so I’m unsure of its affect on my lipid profile. I’d like to gain some lean muscle mass in order to drive up lifts and add some hypertrophy. Is there any way to gain weight without it being deleterious to my lipid profile? As I turn 40 this year, my bloodwork and health definitely trump aesthetics or haphazardly chasing PRs. Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Gaining muscle mass (i.e., hypertrophy) is a function of genetics, training, & nutrition. With respect to training, we would recommend increasing overall training volume, and our nutrition recommendations have been discussed in our other content.

We generally do not recommend that people with medical issues related to excess bodyfat gain weight, BUT if your lipids are under control and don’t have any other issues, you may be a candidate for weight gain. We typically recommend it be done slowly, and recommend monitoring your waist circumference and not exceeding 37" for caucasian males (or the other demographic-specific cutoffs we’ve discussed).
