Kidney Failure, Gout, and training

My dear, relatively young friend friend has been struggling with kidney failure and gout. He isn’t on dialysis yet but I understand it’s a near thing.

He has a long history of training and even had a career in it, including as a physical therapist, but has really cut back as the gout has gotten worse, and I just found out that his newest doctor after moving has given him a “dim prognosis” and has him “rest a lot.”

I’ve seen Austin’s response to similar concerns here but I’m at a bit of a loss for how to deal with the counter narrative. I’m curious what counter balancing risks there are from training for individuals with kidney failure and gout.

I’m also not sure what an UpToDate article is and google returned nothing for “uptodate beraki kidney” that seemed relevant.

Unfortunately there isn’t quite enough information here for me to have a good understanding of what’s going on with this individual. However, neither kidney failure nor gout are reasons to advise a patient to “rest a lot”. Gout is very treatable, and does not represent a reason to avoid exercise. Kidney failure is an extremely broad term with many possible underlying issues, but none of these would make exercise something to be avoided either. This individual may benefit from obtaining a second opinion / consultation with someone else on the matter.
