Marinade question

Could the fat in marinades (olive oil, buttermilk, etc) be considered trace fats? Or does enough of the marinade really penetrate the meat to the point where you have to try and estimate how much you’re consuming?

If it is marinated long enough, e.g. > 30 minutes or so, it’s probably going to add some Calories. I think it’s important to consistently ignore or add stuff like sauces, marinades, etc. if using this approach to dieting.

Oh ok. If you wanted to measure a marinade, would you just weigh how much went in with the meat at the beginning and then weigh what’s left over

I’d probably just use the #'s for macros and Cals for how much marinade I use, as I don’t think the energy density remains constant during the marinade process.

To be fair, I don’t really count any of this stuff save for fat I use for cooking. I think it’s more important to be precise rather than accurate.

Honestly, I would just do the same and avoid the fuss like you say (your wisdom on precision over accuracy), but I guess I felt like my situation would maybe not allow me to do that.

My wife usually cooks our dinners and while they are very tasty and always include vegetables and some kind of protein/carb, they are not always what you would want fat-wise, necessarily. Fat content can vary greatly per meal and the amount of meals she makes with marinades are relatively infrequent, so I thought maybe I couldn’t consider those marinades trace fats because of that infrequence. What do you think?

I’ve starting recording my nutrition day with dinner so that I can adjust the next three meals (breakfast, lunch and snack) accordingly.

I’d probably just guess some amount of fat and try your best rather than get too granular with it. If there’s a substantial amount of fat in the marinade, I’d use something like 10g of fat to account for it. I’d probably just ignore the fat-free marinades.

Ok. Thanks so much for that clarity. It’s good to know you can marinade lean chicken breast and not add too much fat there.
