Hey Doc, I came across Nootropics as an alternative to Adderall, and it seems to good to be true.
Have you taken Nootropics before to give you a little boost during Med School? If so, did it give you a mental boost remotely to the drug found in the movie “Limitless”
How do you feel about Modafinil/Armodafinil? Would you prescribe it to a patient that doesn’t respond well to Adderall? Have you seen Nootropics being abused more than Adderall?
Are Nootropics (pharma and natural (Herbs)) a placebo or do they actually work?
What are you general thoughts behind this for an individual that has an issue with focusing.
Thanks!
I have not taken any nootropics.
I am highly skeptical that they provide a benefit anywhere near what is commonly reported / observed with stimulants like Adderall, and I would completely disregard anything seen in a Hollywood movie like Limitless.
Modafinil is very useful when prescribed for certain sleep/wake disorders, and is fairly safe & well-tolerated, but is not generally used for “focus” or “thinking” issues.
Stimulants like Adderall/Ritalin are definitely abused more frequently, but “nootropics” is a vague, broad category so it’s difficult to make claims about “abuse”.
Again, you’ll have to be more specific about the compound(s) you’re talking about if you’re going to ask questions about efficacy.
Finally, “issues with focusing” can result from many different things, and may require a medical/neuropsychiatric evaluation.
