Recently diagnosed with Parkinsonian tremor. I’m taking sinemet. I’ve been reading that protein antagonizes sinemet. I’ve been told that at this stage protein is OK…at the RDA.
I’ve decreased protein from 190 gm/day to 175, and take any protein supplementation in the evening. Opinions?
There are risks and benefits to lower protein diets and protein redistribution diets for this application. Existing evidence on these strategies in PD is mixed and I would talk to your doctor about specific plans related to your dietary protein intake to come up with a shared plan.
Part of the problem is phrasing the question to the doctor. Your answer helps.
So let’s say protein redistribution or reduction is encouraged. Would this have an effect on workout timing? Such as scheduling closer to protein consumption?
I don’t think the existing data on workout timing and protein dosing suggests this is something to worry about except for maybe the tip of the spear with respect to performance.
I was searching for an answer to another question I had and ran across this. Sorry to resurrect an old post. I was diagnosed with PD 13 years ago at 36. One thing that has stressed me a bit is the timing of my protein intake so it won’t interfere with my dopamine-based meds. What I figured out by trial and error is to take my meds at least two hours after eating and one hour before.meals. My neurologists mentioned that the digestion brings blood to the “gut” which distributes the medicine better. Most of the time, if I eat a small meal, say a bagel and piece of chicken, I can actually feel the medicine taking affect and it’s like a wave of sweet relief that seems to work better/last longer than not eating after taking meds. I take Stalevo and recently started mixing in Rytary (immediate and extended release together) so it can be taken with a lot less planning around protein. Again, this is just what works for me so take it for what it’s worth. I’m certainly not a doc, but my wife is!. I worked with my team at UVA and Carilion to refine this plan so maybe mention it to your docs and say some random dude on the internet said so…Seriously, Bophame, I wish you good luck and great training. I sure hope Jordan doesn’t scold me for this but I just wanted to share my strategies from dealing with this shit for a long time.
