I have a client who is asking about his wife’s peripheral neuropathy. I know there are benefits to strength training for balance. I have another client who has peripheral neuropathy and he says he has seen a big difference since beginning strength training. He has even decreased his medication by half. The first client asking for his wife is leery because they tried some “treatment” that sounds like a scam and paid 5k for no benefit. I know she would find huge benefits from exercise and strength training but I also want to be honest with them. Do you know of any research on strength training helping with this? I can see how it could help decrease pain and I would think blood flow would be a good thing. will it help with the numbness? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Yes, there is evidence of significant benefits from exercise on those with peripheral neuropathy. There’s some differences in how much benefit depending on the cause of neuropathy, e.g. diabetes vs chemotherapy. In any case, it is reasonable to say that exercise, including progressive resistance training (strength training), would improve health and function.
Some references that will likely not be helpful at selling the service, but to bolster the claim that exercise is beneficial:
