Sugar and Cholesterol

My brother in law was told by his cardiologist to reduce his sugar/carb intake to help lower his cholesterol. Is there any truth to this outside of the effect of just losing weight?

There’s evidence that lowering carbohydrate intake, particularly refined sugars, can lower triglycerides even if weight is maintained. There’s also some evidence that with weight loss, a reduction in refined sugar intake helps keep HDL levels a bit higher. There’s also evidence that reducing refined sugar intake by avoiding sugar sweetened beverages helps promote weight loss.
