[Meet Report] USPA Drug Tested Oregon Outlaw Open | M | 39 | 605 kg @ 96 kg Open Raw | 374.5 Wilks
This was my third meet (second full power). My goal for this meet was to get a 1300 lb. total. I picked my attempts, so that hitting my seconds would get me that goal.
Training
7 weeks out I realized my plan of tapering by running out a 4 day Texas Method split was a bad one, so I switched to Barbell Medicine 12 week strength, and just did the last 6 weeks of that program.
Pre-meet day
I had no interest in cutting to fit this old body into the 90kg class, so I showed up to weigh-ins fat and happy at 96kg.Equipment check didn’t go well; the Tommy Kono knee sleeves I had been training with were not accepted by the judge. Turns out they are on this list: USPA approved equipment list , but not the USPA rulebook, so I ended up borrowing some SBDs from a friend and getting those approved.
Meet day - part 1
This meet is split up over two days, so women, juniors, and men under 75kg went Saturday, and everyone else Sunday.I showed up Sunday morning at 8am for rules brief, and warmups before the first flight started at 9am; I was in the second flight, so I felt pretty relaxed and not rushed.
Except no one was there!
There were a handful of lifters, but no one official. Rumor from one of the lifters was that the officials changed the start time after yesterday’s meet concluded to an 11am start time. Thankfully this is a local meet for me, so I drove back home and rested and ate a bit more food.
Meet day - part 2
Showed up again at the meet location at 10am, found out instead of 3 flights and I being in the second flight, there were now 2 flights, and I was in the first one.
Squats
- 200 kg – red lighted for racking too soon.
- 220 kg – red lighted for depth; is it me? Is it the new knee sleeves? Trying not to panic, but aware I might bomb out.
- 220 kg – white lights. Phew… (Meet PR)
Bench
- 135 kg – white lights
- 140 kg – red lighted for dipping the bar after the press command.
- 140 kg – white lights (Meet PR)
Deadlift
- 225 kg – whites
- 235 kg – whites
- 245 kg – whites (PB) (Meet PR)
Silverware
Ended up taking second to a great 29 year old kid, who beat me by 5 kg. We had a friendly rivalry going, lots of fist bumps.
Lessons learned
Get some more expensive knee sleeves that aren’t likely to be removed from the approved list; probably yellow jackets. Make sure I’m hitting depth with those.Practice paused bench more.Next year I get to compete in the masters division, so I’m excited to see how that goes.
