My overall healthy son (5-10, 115 lbs) will be turning 16 in a couple of months. At our next visit with his dermatologist, we expect that the doctor is going to prescribe accutane to treat his acne. During the school year, his acne was responsive to antibiotics but the doctor said we would have to discontinue antibiotic treatment after 6 months, which we did. His acne flared up over the summer, hence our expectation that the doctor will now lean towards prescribing accutane based on our prior discussions with him on the topic. Unfortunately, I just started introducing my son to barbell training and was about to get him started on the NLP. Do you have any concerns/recommendations relating to the side-effects from accutane and weight lifting? Is there a greater risk of injury? Should we hold off on NLP until after he completes accutane treatment? What about concerns relating to accutane generally? Recommended dosage?
I would not have any concerns about training here, and I would not delay training for this.
The only thing I would mention is that the drug monitoring parameters for isotretinoin include (among others) a creatine kinase level and liver function tests, which can themselves be elevated by training in close proximity to the blood draw. This may cause “false positives” for drug side effects. So when routine monitoring labs are planned, I would take a few days off from training before getting them drawn.
