age-related sarcopenia and osteopenia

Hi! Dr. Feigenbaum,

Just gave a tub of your Whey-Rx to my neighbor – for her dad who’s really losing weight. 92 years, was 5’11 – 185 in his 70s and 80s, now down to 5’8” or 9” and 128 pounds. Kidneys are fine (just checked last week) but sarcopenia has really kicked in. Somewhat active (short walks) but not really exercising.

Pre-diabetic, so suggested that she combine with almond breeze unsweetened almond milk (1 carb/0 added sugars per serving) – then make it seductive with some yogurt and frozen fruit so he will drink it.

Are there any general guidelines that you would be comfortable giving for a non-patient? Frequency? Dosing? Is there a point where one should be concerned about too much protein?
Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mike,

Thanks for the post and I’m pretty impressed you hooked your neighbor up. Solid work!

As far as recommendations, I’d be aiming for something like 1.2-1.6 grams of protein/kg bodyweight per day spread out over 3-4 meals. Getting some resistance training in- even if it’s just the smallest amount, would be great.

Thank you so much, just gave the info to my neighbor who can’t thank you enough!

By the way, the San Diego seminar was beyond every expectation - just outstanding in every way! Am so hoping that there will eventually be a Part II or that the idea of a conference will materialize. Keep waiting for someone more articulate to write up their experience of San Diego, if not, I’ll give it a go. Told my wife that it wasn’t just the best birthday gift she had ever given me, but that it was the best gift I have ever received! Kudos all around - it was just a litany of superlatives. Anyone who wonders if it would be worthwhile - JUST GO!

Thanks for the kind words! It means a lot to us. It was great to meet you.

My wife and I were at the San Diego seminar too, and we enthusiastically second what mikey-likes-it said. We both learned a lot, got more motivated to train, really enjoyed meeting and working with the BBM team and the other attendees, and overall had an incredibly fun and informative weekend. Getting coached on the lifts by the best in the business was awesome, and with Austin’s encouragement I even managed a deadlift PR that I’m sure wouldn’t have happened that day in any other setting. So yeah, it was a great experience!

Thank you, Jim. Was great to meet you!
