Beginner Template: Too weak for the bar

Hi there,

I’ve picked up the beginner template to get my wife training. She is about 34 years old and never resistance trained before. Currently she is unable to squat, bench, or overhead press the 45lb barbell. We’ve got 10 to 90lb dumbbells i’ve got her benching OHPing so i think we’re good there. What would be a good alternative for her to use as a squat to work up to the barbell? Air squats, sit-to-stands, dumbbell goblet squats were some that came to mind but wanted to double check here first.

Thank you and I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.

Hi Patrick,
Great to hear that she’s training! Love that, and it sounds like you’re making some great adjustments here. For the squat, I would definitely work on a program of air squats and DB goblet squats. If she can do these to depth, that is great. If she’s struggling to squat to depth, then you can use a sit to stand or a squat to a box or bench first as well. When I have a client in this position, I usually use an approach similar to the reps and sets in the At Home Template for this movement. It’s a lot of exposure at a low intensity that way.

Awesome, thanks Leah.

Great point on the at-home template, I’ll give that a look-over as well.
