My doctor just put me on Amlodipine for hypertension. I’m just wondering, training and side effect wise, if I’d be better on an ACE inhibitor or ARB? My doc said that the CCB are the first line drug, my understanding is that for younger folk (I’m 38), ACE inhibitors are usually the first line drug. I didn’t want to argue, but I’ll get a second opinion if you think it’s worth it.

Calcium channel blockers are generally considered first line for primary/essential hypertension in black and elderly individuals who do not have another medical condition that requires treatment with an ACE or ARB.
As far as your specific case, I think it’s reasonable to ask for an explanation from your doctor if you have questions.
