Curiosity question about training for explosivness

Drs.,

If you were training an athlete that wanted to become more explosive would there be any utility in anything besides making him stronger on the basic barbell movements? I guess how I interpret your opinion on this subject would be to improve his maximal force production and thus making a given amount of force more submaximal and able to be produced at a faster rate. Then I would imagine you have them practice their sport and just work on being more “explosive” within their sports practice itself. I guess I just was curious if you ever think there is a time for plyometrics or explosive movements similar to that. My guess would be that you would say that the ability to produce force at a fast rate is largely genetic and those types of things are largely a waste of time. Am I correct or missing the mark?

To the extent “explosiveness” can be improved, our preferred approach is to increase force production potential (i.e., strength) and emphasize sport practice, yes.
