Diverticulitis

Hey Docs

I apologize if you guys have gone into this with details on the forum. I couldn’t find anything super specific. I was told at the E.R. I have diverticulitis today. I had that confirmed via CT and blood work. I went in for possible appendicitis(it was focal to right lower abdomen).
I didn’t get a ton of education from them as they were busy and told me to follow up with my primary doctor. I can do this but I know a lot of times uninformed doctors on lifting will steer towards complete advoidance. They put me on 7-10 days of Augmentin. Should I completely advoid lifting in this time? A basic online search recommended 6-8 weeks without lifting. Is there a higher risk of diverticulitis from heavy sets with a belt and bracing/valsalva? I’m 6’1 about 225 if it helps, and have lifted for several years although this can be more in general terms and less specific about me. It also mentioned hernias as a higher risk once diverticulitis is diagnosed. I’ve listened to your guys talks on hernias. Currently I have been benching 3x week, squatting 2x week, pulling 2-3 times. Was doing pretty high RPE deadlifting over the last month or two.

thanks for your time.

I am not aware of any reason (or direct evidence) to avoid lifting in the context of treated, uncomplicated diverticulitis, or in the setting of Augmentin use.

Thanks Austin
Do I not even need to adjust anything during the first 7-10 days of treatment with my RPE or belt use? Just making sure I’m not going to push an inflammation into a perforation.

These things are unlikely to be related to lifting. We would recommend following up with your physician if you have specific questions regarding any physical activity restrictions.
