Do DLs REALLY hypertrophy glutes?

there’s this notion floating around on strength reddit that the lack of a (prominent) eccentric component to the DL combined with the fact that they more directly stress the spinal erectors means that DLs don’t contribute much to glute hypertrophy, and that it is totally possible for natural lifters to pull a 2.5x BW DL or even better without correspondingly impressive glutes.

the idea has, at least, a superficial plausibility around it, especially given that several well-known deadlift-only athletes have flat-assed physiques

Reading back I see that I haven’t really posed a clear question, so:

What DL number would you guess would correspond most directly to a 315 squat in terms of glute hypertrophy? If someone adds mass to their glutes by exclusively squating until they reach 315 on the squat, how much weight will that persons twin have to be able to DL to acquire the same amount of glute hypertrophy? Obviously it would be unreasonable to expect an exact number, but if you had to guess would you say the answer to this question would be closer to 600 as some would suggest (which would indicate that DLs are indeed rather inefficient at building mass in the glutes), or a more modest 400?

I would not ascribe any DL number to a 315lb squat in terms of glute hypertrophy. The intensity doesn’t matter really with respect to hypertrophy…remember? The volume is much more important.

I think the notion that a 600lb DL = the same hypertrophy potential as a 315 squat is hilariously precise without being useful. It also indicates nothing about the efficiency, really.

The squat has a greater ROM than the DL and is typically done for more volume than pulls (though not in our programs) so I can see the “logic”, but wouldn’t pay any attention to it.

Okay, thanks.
