Does pre-workout whey make sense even if I eat enough protein throughout the day?

Hi,

due to gut health issues I am on a high protein, high fat, keto diet. My protein and fat comes all from animal sources. I do eat more protein a day than I would need for optimal protein intake as set out by Jordan in his article 7 Rules to Optimize Protein Intake.

That said, I train first thing in the morning in the early AM hours. I can eat immediately after my workout but not before. The Nutrition FAQ Sticky recommends a whey protein pre-workout shake for early AM workouts.

Would you reccomend such a meal even when I do eat enough protein after my workout and during the following 24 hours?

Many thanks

Mica

I think eating something before you workout is almost universally better than being 100% fasted.

You are not on a keto diet if you’re eating high protein. There is also no evidence that this style of diet would benefit “gut issues.”

I would also not advise the diet you’re currently on unless you are okay with never eating carbohydrates again.

Thanks for your recommendation about a pre-workout meal and the clarification on the term “keto”. The diet itself is a temporary measure only.
