Exercise Selection to Improve Movement Efficiency

Hi guys,

I have recently hired a coach, just hoping to learn some effective cues as I would like to become a coach myself someday. After sending my training log and some videos of my squat and deadlift, I received a program that has lots of accessory work targeted to address deficiencies in my movement without much explanation as to why. In the first week, the deadlift has been completely replaced with low block pulls in an effort to fix my technique. Although I am aware I would benefit from improving my form, it does not seem like an efficient way to make corrections based on what I have learnt from BBM. These changes also come as a cost to volume, intensity and frequency of the big 3 and close variations of. It also keeps me in the gym for much longer. What is the merit in selecting exercises to target movement ‘problems’? please let me know.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack,

Have you asked this question of your coach?

Hi Leah,

Thanks for the response. I have asked my coach several questions about this but I’ve gotten some pretty vague answers. Do you think this sounds like a reasonable tradeoff between specificity and technical improvement? Are there situations where you would consider this more targeted approach?

Regards,
Jack

The tricky thing here is that I don’t have the same info as your coach, so I don’t feel comfortable weighing in on why this was programmed or whether it’s reasonable. I can give the general note that we don’t really see the role of supplemental work to be overcoming or correcting deficiencies. I can understand your questions, but there is just a lot about your overall programming that we don’t know, so it’s not really possible to offer specific insight on all of these training variables here. Sorry!

I am definitely no coaching Authority but I can offer what I would do were I you in your position which would be decide between two choices; get a new coach if they can’t satisfactorily explain their programming choices or try what He/she suggests and see how it works for you

Thanks Leah, your answer pretty much covers my question! I know it’s impossible to give a complete answer without more context, but that helps a lot.
