Grip failing on DL, Wrist rollers any good?

Hi,

Quick question, my Grip seems to have weakened quite a bit.
I was deadlifting 180kg x 5 x 1 with over hand grip no straps with chalk just before Xmas but since the layoff due to gyms been closed I’m having trouble getting my grip back.
I’m current deadlifting 162.50 but my grip is struggling, to a point where I tweaked my back few days ago due to losing form by struggling to hold onto the bar, the weight felt fine just the grip wasn’t there.
I know the hook and alternated grip are options but do you think there are other ways outside the gym to increase strength in the grip to carry over to the deadlift.
I recently bought a wrist roller. Would that significantly increase my grip overtime or is more deadlifting the best way to increase grip strength?
I’ve watched a video on Ed Coan where he has some good stuff on grip strength but I’m curious if you have any optioning yourselves and if you think wrist rollers have a place in strength training?

JM,

I think you should be aiming to use hook or alternate grip on your heaviest deadlift sets to securely hold onto the bar. I do not think it is a reasonable strategy to use double overhand for your heavy sets. I also don’t think the grip is related to a back tweak.

Strength development is relatively specific and I don’t think a wrist roller is likely to help deadlift grip strength compared to deadlifting or similar exercises. I don’t think wrist rollers are particularly useful for anything pertaining to barbell training.

Thanks Jordan for the reply.
I’ll start working on my hook grip and go from there.

Yeah I just felt I was trying to concentrate on holding onto the bar too much that my form was off and I ended up hurting my back, but thankfully I took your advice about pain and training and kept on moving and going to the gym, all good now.

I’ll start working on the hook grip.

Thanks again for your reply
