My wife has recently become a fan of the Moscow Mule. (For those unfamiliar, this is a mixed alcoholic beverage often served in a copper mug.) I was looking into buying my wife a set of copper mugs so we could make these drinks at home, but during a search for the mugs I was bombarded with a lot of references to copper mugs having a risk of leaching copper into the beverage and that being a health hazard. Some manufacturers said to only use mugs coated in a food safe lacquer. Others said not to worry about it unless you’re letting your drink sit in the mug for several hours. A quick Google search did not yield much high quality information on this. Have you heard of these risks? Is this one of those things that’s probably not worth worrying about? Or is this a significant risk that merits only using certain types of copper mugs?
If it helps, we only drink about one alcoholic beverage about twice a month. Maybe once a week in the summer months. We wouldn’t be using these mugs for anything else.
I don’t think this is worth worrying about, particularly with your very low frequency of exposure (if this is even an issue for the mugs you’re using).
