Hip labrar tear

Hi, i’m a 25 years old. I was a crossfitter and a boxer for 4 years. 6 months ago i felt a sharp pain in my left hip. Couple weeks later i was diagnoised with a cam and pincer femoroacetabular impingement with anterior hip labral tear.
i was given the option of going into surgery- shaving the pincer and fixing the tear.
i Am still trying to avoid surgry. I didnt get back to crossfit. I did start going to regular gym as a rehabilitation.
i mainly do back squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts hip abductor machine.
lately i have been feeling pain in my hip which i have not felt in weeks, and i started to experience a neuropathic pain in the same leg.
Should i avoid any exercises? Do you have suggestions for me to make my training more helpful? How could i get rid of the neuropathic pain and what could cause it suddenly? Do i have to do surgery if i want to be able to run and lift heavy?

Hi there! I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. Have you gotten the chance to read our hip series? Derek provides some highly relevant information here regarding FAI and rehab considerations. There are many individuals without pain with intra-articular hip pathologies which points to the discordant relationship between pathology diagnosed on imaging and symptoms.

Can you tell me more about what you mean by neuropathic pain?

There are not any specific exercises that you should avoid at this time. Rather, I would advocate for training tolerable movements within tolerable ranges of motion and loads/intensities. We would not expect that you would be fully pain-free throughout this process. I recommend also reading this article to better understand our general approach to pain and training.

No, you do not necessarily have to have surgery in order to run and lift heavy. I would say that this is a circumstance in which a consult is likely the most beneficial for you as this would allow us the time to discuss your unique situation, training goals, current symptoms, etc. If you are interesting in pursing a remote consultation with one of us from the rehab team, please fill out this form for more information regarding the services that we offer.
