How do I gain weight while eating healthy?

I am a 61 year old female. Last fall I did about 15 weeks of BBM and had nutrition with Vanessa as well. I dropped down to about 125 from a top weight of 132. I was doing fairly well with eating habits until my 88 year old father was hospitalized for 12 days last October and then in rehab for 12 days. eating on the run, my habits took a nose dive. When he was discharged from rehab (he lives with me) he came home on a low-sodium diet. Cooking for low-sodium has been challenging for me. Trying to watch his sodium, and vitamin K, (he’s on coumadin) and my carbs (I’m prediabetic at 5.7) has been difficult. A lot of the food we used to eat he can’t eat anymore. I am eating better now, eating more veggies like broccoli, red peppers, cucumbers, squash, etc. So I can have my plate filled up with one meat and the veggies, and feel like I am eating a big meal…but the veggies have very few calories in them. I’m down to 121 now. I would like to get back up to about 125, and he’s under doctor’s orders to gain a little weight too. But for myself I have no idea how to make this happen and still keep both his & my dietary needs in check.

My waist is 28.5 and my Body Fat as measured by cheap calipers was about 24%. I do carry my weight in my abdominal area (blame my grandmother’s genetics)/

I just tested out the past week on my lifts: Squat 192 (but ugly), bench 90, DL 245, all in lbs, and best not to ask about the OHP. I am starting the BBM Women’s Group this week.

Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.

Hi Kim,

I don’t think I would necessarily recommend weight gain at this time for you given the history of prediabetes.

As far as how I would advise someone to gain weight, it would be mainly from adding carbohydrates and fats to the diet. Specifically, adding more starches and nuts, nut butters, seeds, and similar to the diet.

That said, your dad is likely at high risk for sarcopenia and would be well-served by increasing his protein intake and engaging in some resistance training. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJBqBDZoSvQ
