How should I go about gaining weight?

Dear Jordan,

Thanks for answering my question on training vlog #24 regarding rapid weight gain and training sensitivity. I wanted to follow up on this with my own personal situation. I’ll try to include as much info as possible.

I’m male, 23 years old, 6’1, and weigh 155lbs. I’m not terribly athletic, and pretty much only carry noticeable body fat around my abdomen (33” waist). I feel I may be closer to the training resistant end of the spectrum, however I may be nocebo-ing myself here! My goals are to weigh around 200lbs, be as strong as I can be at that weight, and to look better.

My current intake probably averages around 2000 calories. Earlier this year, I did GOMAD for a week (I already drink a lot of milk so I attempted the gallon and it didn’t severely affect me), and I think I gained nearly 10lbs in that time. I thought this was too aggressive for me, so I stopped and dropped back down to 155lbs relatively quickly. Maybe this was mostly water retention?

I’m prepared to take training very seriously now, and seek advice on how to eat. Would you recommend that I try gaining weight by titrating the milk up to a gallon this time? (Or some other arbitrary amount). Or should I start by carefully tracking and incrementally adding calories to find where I gain 1-2lbs a week?

I understand this may be a dumb question, but I feel I need some personal guidance on how to go about this…

Matthew

I think gaining more than 1-2lbs a week is a bad idea unless the ends (weight gain for strength acquisition in the short time period) justify the means.
