How to get away with eating candy...?

Serious question: Is refined sugar (ie: candy) ‘OK’ to eat if I do it when I take one of my protein shakes? My admittedly uninformed thinking is that the protein slows down the absorption, etc.

I think that decreasing intake of refined sugars is a good public health aim and if someone had an issue with certain elements of their cholesterol panel (separate from or in addition to obesity, diabetes, etc.) then I would encourage them to NOT eat candy.

There is also no reason to eat candy in order to speed up the absorption of a protein shake, which spikes muscle protein synthesis about 30 minutes after you drink it (with or without candy).

Thanks for the response. What I meant to ask was, “Does eating refined sugar with a good dose of protein mitigate the harmful effects of refined sugars at all?”

Not really, though I’d need a definition of what “harmful effects of refined sugars” are specifically.

This sort of thing:

While neither of these links answer the question I posed to you, I’d like to point out that both lay articles are discussing the post-meal blood sugar and insulin levels in diabetic individuals and not clinical outcomes of any sort. Furthermore, this study has not been replicated whilst looking at outcomes to my knowledge and note the distinct lack of candy in this study.
