Hypothyroidism and its effects on performance

Hello Doctors

I have been recently diagnosed as being hypothyroid based on and elevation in TSH (4.83 in October). This has steadily increased over the last couple of years. Other baseline bloodwork has been unremarkable. Major issues I have been having recently was lethargy, sleeplessness, memory issues. No major changes in weight…have stayed between 230-235 for last couple of years. Began SS about 3 months ago (Squat 320, Overhead Press 145, Deadlift 322.5). My sleep habits are not the best but this can be sometimes unavoidable due to my emergency rotation schedule at work. I am 37 and I definitely don’t bounce back from long days and nights as I used to, however it seems I have really hit a slump recently. I am also getting a sleep study in November. Anyhow, I was started on levothyroxin 25 mcg daily two weeks ago. To get recheck TSH IN 4 more weeks. Based on your collective thoughts how quickly does the average guy with hypothyroidism begin to bounce back following initiation of treatment and should I begin to see improvements in my progression, or am I beginning to stall? Additional info…waist measurement 41, height 6 feet. About 8 years ago was 270 lbs, with hypercholesterolemia, hyperuricemia, prehypertensive. No longer dealing with any of these issues since weight loss etc. No other current issues. Thanks in advance.

Did anyone check your Free T4 levels?

25 mcg is a fairly low dose, but there’s no “standard” amount of time it takes to reverse symptoms of hypothyroidism (which you may or may not be experiencing – in other words, the symptoms may still be coming from something else). It’s highly variable from person to person. I agree with the plan to recheck the serum TSH after several weeks of therapy.

Thanks for the reply.

No additional endocrine testing performed.
