is surgery ever recommended?

Hello folks, I think it has been around a year now since my last post. I wanted to ask if barbell medicine ever recommend surgery for a bulging/herniated disc if conservative treatment is failing? Been 4 years now and can’t seem to improve.

Sorry to hear about this.

Unfortunately we don’t know enough about your situation or how it’s been managed (“conservative treatment” can mean almost anything) to be able to comment on this. If you are interested in getting a professional opinion, you could pursue a consultation with one of our rehab staff or with a trusted clinician who is local to you.

Well I have watched some of your videos after finding out about you guys like 10 months ago maybe? I have trouble doing any gym exercise without a flare up with even the most minimal weight. I cannot sit at all as the compression of sitting seems to make the pain intensify. The pain in my right leg is bad as well as my lower back, but the leg pain might be worse. I will have to get a picture of my mri for you sometime next week.

Yes, I’m sorry to hear this.

However, passively receiving general information via watching a video is often not enough to address individual issues for people with such complex issues. I would stand by my recommendation for an individual consultation, whether with our staff (who would aim to get you back to functioning non-surgically), or with a trusted local clinician (though I can obviously make no guarantees about what they will do / say / recommend).

I just saw this. I’m out of hope now as I believe I’ve tried everything. My favorite lifter to watch (Jesse Norris) has had his issues since 2015 and hasn’t been able to overcome it and hit heavy numbers (for him)

What is the barrier between you and seeing someone, in person, about your issue?

I don’t get on these forums often but was reading some post.
I’ve had a similar situation for 2 years with chronic nerve pain in my back that goes down my legs at times. I’m actually off school right now because I can’t tolerate sitting for even 5 minutes. I have been lifting though recently. What are your symptoms like man? Mri results don’t always correlate to pain, BUT sometimes they do. Talk to your surgeon, if your symptoms are horrible and not improving after 4 years I would personally get surgery (if your symptoms correlate to whatever is going on your mri)

The originally poster said that he has a herniated disc and it’s been 4 yeArs. Unless I read something wrong he didn’t say that he had a normal mri. If it’s been affecting his functioning then surgery may be an option, but I don’t know enough about his symptoms. Thank you for wishing me luck on my recovery though I appreciate that, it’s been a very rough process

I can appreciate the empathetic exchanges on the forum like what is observed in this thread. However, I think it’s VERY important to not allow our own personal experiences with a situation, and in particular pain, to negatively be imprinted on others. This has serious negative consequences and often sets unnecessary expectations about pain, resolution, and necessary interventions.

@Shafiqblake - I do not recommend coming onto the forum and asking people to rate their symptoms on any given day, this isn’t how we’d typically approach such conversations and more to the point, I’m not certain what you’d do with that information once acquired.
@John_miller I’m sorry to hear about your situation and I agree with Austin that you should either seek out a local clinician that is trusted to deliver evidence based information or we’d be more than happy to consult with you: Contact Us | Barbell Medicine

It seemed to me that doctors always offer a surgery if conservative methods of treatment did not help. When I was treated for acne and other diseases of my face, nothing helped me for a long time
