Jillian Michaels

Coleman Hughes had Jillian Michaels on his podcast this week. I listen to Conversations with Coleman pretty regularly. But this might be the first time I recall having a ‘fitness influencer’ type on his cast or to discuss topics in the health domain at all really…other than policy wonk stuff like health care policy. Probably a pretty different subscriber base on average.

She dedicated a decent chunk of the talk to GLP-1’s and I thought there were definitely some…differences in tone and claims on the topic compared to the BBM Pod.

Thought there might be an interest in reaching out and offering a different viewpoint.

Didn’t bother linking. Very easy to find, happy to provide a link if wanted though.

I would dismiss out of hand pretty much anything Jillian Michaels has to say about GLP-1s or really anything else. I watched a podcast where the Nadolsky brothers attempted to explain some of the finer points of obesity and its management to her during which she made her misunderstanding and knowledge deficit on the topic quite apparent . The tone and messaging are different from here because Jillian Michaels is a celebrity fitness personality with no actual expertise, not an evidence based science communicator. It’s so far apart as to be irrelevant.

Oh I completely agree. I thought it a shame that she is who Coleman brought in to talk about fitness. It’s a topic outside his normal beat. So it may be the only exposure many of his listeners get on the topic.

Coleman seems to be an incisive thinker on a few of the topics I’ve heard him speak on, but this is an obvious case of looking well outside his realm of expertise. It’s understandable if you don’t know much about fitness, really, in much the same way it would be unsurprising for someone to have Dr Oz on their podcast instead of BBM staff. Just the nature of celebrity.

I’m listening to Dr. Nick Tiller’s “The Health and Wellness Lie”. Bit of a mixed review on the book if I were to give one…but…

He absolutely rips Danika Patrick apart. Pretty much says she’s either incompetent or a huckster. Maybe an incompetent huckster.

The Tiller book sounds interesting — I haven’t read it yet. His stuff on fitness misinformation is usually pretty solid. How are you finding it so far?

It’s ok. The meat of it is solid. I think my only critique is it’s more drawn out than it should be and so can be repetitive or a little preachy.

I think it’d been a much better book at about 1/2 the length.
