Magnesium supplementation

Would you recommend magnesium supplementation to any clients? I’ve heard claims of it boosting insulin sensitivity and as a diabetic it seems enticing.

I would not recommend magnesium supplementation and I don’t think the data suggests it does anything for individuals with insulin resistance either.

Doesn’t magnesium help your body utilize zinc? It also calms you and helps you sleep. It also helps with Vitamin D absorption.

Magnesium does lots of stuff, but that doesn’t mean you need to supplement it. The body is really good about making sure it gets what it needs.

I’ve been taking a magnesium synergy supplement every day for the last six months. I take one 250mg of magnesium.

Yea, I don’t think you should be doing that.

Out of curiosity, how would I argue with someone who insists on taking a bunch of different supplements, often in combinations to try to undo side effects from one? (Other than, of course, “don’t.”) eg I’ve got a friend who read something indicating 50% of Americans are deficient in magnesium (seems unlikely?) and has started taking it. Is his claim complete garbage? Or is it “true” but doesn’t imply the thing he thinks it implies?

I wouldn’t argue with them, I’d just say “okay” and move on with my life. For any specific claim, ask for hard evidence. If they provide evidence, make sure that it’s clinically relevant. I wouldn’t argue with folks in general though. It’s a waste of time.

Sorry to piggyback on this but it seemed related,
At the recommendation of a friend (I know, I know) I have been taking 50mg of Zinc, 500 mg, 800 mcg of Folic Acid for about six months now for daily headaches, It has been extremely successful, even if it is a placebo I will continue to take unless you see a real downside?
