Thoughts on probiotics & magnesium for hyperactive pregnant women

Hello Dr. Feigenbaum,

Do you believe that probiotics are a good supplement to take for someone with constant upset stomach/loss of appetite? Or for any other reason? Or is this supplement merely witch craft?

Also - I heard you mention on the Art of Manliness podcast that you sometimes give magnesium for hyperactive present women. What exactly does hyperactive entail? Does that mean they are restless and stiff?’

Is magnesium a sedative, and does it help people relax/sleep better? If so, why not recommend that for everyone to sleep better?

Thanks I really appreciate the great supplements/ articles. Hopefully I’ll get training soon.

Willy

Willy_P,

I think a high quality probiotic can be useful for those with certain conditions, like irritable bowel syndrome that has been formally diagnosed. However, most commercially available probiotics are trash because they’re actually dead by the time they reach the consumer.

We give mag for pregnant females if they have eclampsia, preclampsia, or other conditions on that same spectrum OR if they’re going into pre term labor.

It doesn’t work well for sedation (outside of placebo) until doses are high enough to hurt you (potentially).

Thank you for the response! It’s nice to know this.

Is it safe to say that Natural Calm magnesium drink supplement is 100% placebo?

I do not think there is a magnesium-related mechanism by which it “works”.
