Making sense of Whey?

Hi Jordan,

I was reading "7 Rules to Optimize Protein Intake" and noticed you said “Pea protein (double sucks)”. Now I’m thinking I should ditch my pea protein right now for these whey gainzzz you speak of :sunglasses:.

So, I started to do some research on whey and this article came up by a Doctor/ MD comparing plant and animal protein (Link below with citations) on how people should stay away from ALL animal protein because it promotes rapid aging and cancer (IGF-1).

Questions:

  1. Does Whey protein promote cancer growth and rapid aging? What do you think of those studies he provided?

  2. Will whey have a noticeable positive impact on my training compared to pea protein, other than maybe a placebo effect? I wonder what would happen if there was a study where YOU (a person of authority in the strength community) told subjects Pea protein would build more muscle and strength gainzzz over whey? It would be a fun experiment at the very least.

Thanks!

  1. As best as we can tell, no- the evidence does not suggest that protein intake independent of other factors (especially whey supplementation) increases morbidity of disease or mortality rates. I do not think the research he cited is representative of the known health effects- both short and long term- of whey protein ingestion in humans.

  2. No difference likely unless the pea protein is of poor quality and the person does not eat a good amount of dietary protein otherwise. They have already compared whey to a number of different protein sources and as long as the essential amino acid content is similar, which typically requires higher doses of non animal based proteins, the outcomes are the same.

Thanks Jordan!
