Meniscus tear or fear mongering ?

Hello guys,

It’s been a week since I feel pain in my right knee. I’m familiar with your material but I wanted to have your opinion on what’s happening.
To elaborate, the pain is only present when I initiate knee extension (at the bottom of a squat or even at the start of a deadlift). I feel like a “foreign body” just behind my right patella. As it started last week, I tried to manage this by reducing load/speed/ROM but it’s still here. It’s worse when the weight gets heavier but even with light load (empty bar) it appears after ~ 5 reps.
As I think of a meniscus tear I am getting extra cautious with my training and I stop it right when I begin to feel this pain. Nonetheless I try not to catastrophize and test what I can do day to day but i’m feeling more and more concerned about it…

For the background, i’m a 23 yo med student practicing weightlifting as a leisure, weighing 73kg for 1m75.

Hey Simon Dokaspa - thanks for the questions. I have a prior article on the meniscus that may ease some of your concerns: Loading...

Have you checked out the article Pain in Training: What do? The article will provide general advice for these scenarios. If you are noticing symptoms even with empty barbell (20 kg) then you can audible to a goblet squat which will afford more loading options. We’d be happy to consult with you on this matter (see HERE) so we can provide appropriate recommendations and advice.

Thanks a lot for the ressources provided and I will consult you if I see that I can’t manage the symptoms on my own !
